
Brown Scholar Andrew Sorak won First Place at theMAPTA Summer Science Symposium at theconclusion of the nationally competitive 10-weekHouston Methodist Summer Undergraduate ResearchInternship, earning the highest average score from apanel of three judges among more than 50 interns.
Andrew interned in the Hegde Lab focusing on hemin,a toxic breakdown product of hemoglobin released inthe brain during events including intracerebralhemorrhage. Hemin release leads to sustainedaccumulation of DNA damage and reducedreactivation of protective stress responses. Andrew’sresearch advances discovery of preventative ormitigating treatments.
